From PTA President Vince Morris

Hi fellow parents,

So in case you hadn't noticed, there are just three weeks left of school.
It's been a frenzied rush towards the last day; kids packing in field trips like there's no tomorrow, great performances of Fame over the weekend, and, of course, all the sports teams wrapping up their seasons.

This week, we hold a great hybrid PTA meeting that I hope everyone with a Cluster magnet on their car attends. This Wednesday is summer reading and PTA election night.

Your PTA gives everyone who attends a taco dinner, we vote on new leadership for next year, and as a bonus, our crackerjack librarians are planning a big push to remind our students just how much fun reading can be during the dog days of summer. So please come!

Have a great week.

Vince Morris
President, Capitol Hill Cluster School PTA and father of Stuart-Hobson 7th-grader and 5th- and 3rd-graders at Watkins Elementary

4th Annual Family Reading Night & PTA Meeting: Wednesday, June 3, 5:30-7:30 PM
in the Watkins Cafeteria & Library

Each year, before we break for the summer, we celebrate reading and kick off our summer reading program. This year, our summer reading theme is all about heroes (and combating the summer slide): Up Up and Away – Read Every Day!

On June 3, join our three Cluster Librarians and the PTA for the fourth-annual Family Reading Night – a fun event to kick off summer reading. Read more on the Web site about all of the activities planned and make sure you put it on the calendar NOW!

Congratulations S-H Baseball Team!!

It's been a big year for the Stuart-Hobson baseball team, and an even bigger week. They made it all the way to the DC middle-school baseball championship!

The team had an undefeated regular season and then had three playoff games in the city middle-school championship. To make it to the championship game, the team defeated Oyster-Adams and Jefferson, winning both games handily.

The third game was this past Thursday, when SH was in the city finals for the middle-school baseball championship with perennial powerhouse Deal, with its team of 8th-graders.

The score was 0-9 with Deal taking the trophy home. It was a good game for all.
Join the LSAT

Are you interested in providing direct input into the Cluster’s budget and policy decisions? Please consider serving on our school's Local School Advisory Team (LSAT) next year.

The LSAT is a group of teachers, parents, non-instructional staff and community members who advise the principals on important, school-focused and Cluster-wide matters, including curriculum, policy, and budget advice. LSAT members should be able to attend monthly meetings (likely the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m.).

Three LSAT parent rep positions are open for nomination. The Cluster will elect parent reps to serve a 2-year term for each school. The school community will vote on these positions at the PTA General Meeting at 6 p.m. this Wednesday, June 3, at Watkins. One community rep position is also available. From the nomination pool, that person is appointed by the new LSAT after elections.

If you are interested in running for one of the above positions, complete the online nomination form by tomorrow, June 1.
Watkins Farmers Market Opens Wednesday, June 3

The Farmers Market across from Watkins Field will resume this Wednesday and run through the fall. Each Wednesday from 3:30-7:30 p.m. you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables, and this week there will be everything from chard, kale, lettuce and spinach, as well as freshly harvested beets, carrots, rhubarb, fennel, bok choi, and scallions. The market accepts cash, credit, debit, WIC/Senior FMNP, SNAP/EBT, as well as Produce Plus.

Help Needed for Library Inventory
Love hearing about all the great things students are learning in Library class? Adore Ms. Bloom? It's time to pitch in and lend a hand to keep the Peabody library such a great resource. It's time to do an inventory of the collection. It's easy and the more hands the merrier. Click here for the SignUp Genius Web site to find a date this Monday through Wednesday. Email Ms. Bloom at suebloom@gmail.com with any questions.

Keep Safe and Keep Cool
The teachers would like to remind you to keep the sun and heat in mind when preparing your child for school in the morning. Please apply sunscreen and send hats, sunglasses and extra water for recess and PE.

A Final Round of Thanks
The PTA provided delicious treats for teachers and staff this week to round out a month of celebrating the great individuals who make Peabody so special. There isn't enough candy in the world to show how much your hard work and dedication are appreciated!

A reminder for parents:  the judging portion of STEM fair on June 5 during the day is not for parents – it’s for judges only, so students can give their presentations and answer judges' questions.

Ethiopian International Food Day, June 4
On June 4, all DCPS school cafeterias will serve traditional cuisine from Ethiopia, in celebration of Ethiopian International Food Day, as our fourth and final International Food Day this School Year.  Ethiopian International Food Day honors the Sister Cities agreement between Washington, DC, and Addis Ababa, the capitol city of Ethiopia. All students will have the opportunity to taste Ethiopian food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For questions about the menu, contact Ruth Wright at ruth.wright@dc.gov. Watkins Garden Work Day, Saturday, June 13
Please join in on Saturday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help get the Watkins gardens ready for summer. Garden guru Barbara Percival needs lots of hands for mulching, improving the soil in the raised beds, building trellises, etc. This is the only work day we have had all year -- and we need lots of volunteers to make it happen.  Please come even if you only have an hour to spare.  No tools or experience needed. Kids are welcome -- as long as parents/adults come too! Let me know if Barbara know if plan to come (or just show up!), or if you need more information. Email her at BarbaraPercival at Yahoo dot com.

Drop off a Book, Pick Up a Book
Want to encourage more reading? Watkins book nook is in need of more books!  We would love some gently used books for the book nook.

Student Arrival

Just a friendly reminder that the building opens at 8:05 a.m. for students to enter the building each day for breakfast. We want to make sure all of our students are safe and supervised. Our staff is not on duty until 8:05 a.m. and we have noticed many students who arrive earlier than 8:05 go to CVS or hang out unsupervised and we want to make sure they are safe. Students should be entering through the main entrance or the D Street entrance (grades 4-5).

Stuart-Hobson News

Pure Energy: Students Shine in Fame

The performance of Fame on Friday and Saturday at Stuart-Hobson showed how hard students worked to bring their dreams to life, and the renovated auditorium was filled with music. Peabody kids even made an appearance! We can hardly wait to see what will be on the marquee next school year.

Athletes And Their Endeavors Celebrated
May 3 marked an exciting moment where the Athletic Department recognized over 125 athletics for their contribution and participation in various sports. Twelve sports that received recognition including several sports entered into the playoffs as top contenders and our very own State Champions in Football.  This was a successful annual occasion for our talented athletes here at Stuart Hobson Middle School.

Summer School Applications Available in Front Office
Any parents interested in signing their 8th-grade student for summer school can pick up an application at the front office. Students who are required to attend summer school received a paper application today. Parents were notified about their child’s risk for retention with a certified letter sent in February as well as meetings held with families in March and April. Summer school will be held June 26 through July 31st at Eliot-Hine Middle School from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

What You Need to Know: Cluster Communications At Your Service

Communication is a highly valued tool here at the Cluster. Here are a variety of ways to make sure you have all the information you need each week.

Join a Campus-Specific Listserv
There are Yahoo group listservs for each campus. It's a helpful way to have an online dialogue about school activities and events. You may even find a gently used nap-mat! Here's where to start.

PTA Communications
You can find out the latest and greatest about the Cluster on Facebook and Twitter and on the Web site, www.capitolhillclusterschool.org.

We'd love your feedback and any school-related information you'd like to share for this weekly newsletter.  You can also reach out to the editor at news@chcspta.org.
